Trialists McClellan, Caruso score for Harrisburg

(Hershey, Pa., April 12, 2006) - The Harrisburg City Islanders downed Saint Francis University 3-0 on Wednesday at Hersheypark Stadium, improving to 5-0 in preseason play. Trialists David McClellan and Frank Caruso (twice) accounted for Harrisburg's goals, and Sam Bishop played the full game in goal for the shutout.

The City Islanders now prepare for their first-ever international match, an exhibition against Jamaican side Village United F.C. next Monday, April 17, at Hersheypark (7:00 p.m. kickoff). Village United's roster includes forward Teofore Bennett, who scored for the Jamaican National Team in their exhibition against the United States on April 11.

McClellan, a Messiah product and the reigning Division III Player of the Year, cashed in a Ryan O'Neill cross in roughly the 20th minute. Veteran defender J.T. Dorsey broke the ball loose and stormed through the midfield, sending the ball to the right side of the penalty area. O'Neill corralled it before it crossed the end line and popped it across the goalmouth, where McClellan slammed it home for the only score of the first half.

Just five minutes into the second half, Caruso, who lettered for four years at Lancaster Catholic High School and attended San Diego State University, found the scoreboard. Caruso chested down an over-the-top serve from Bernie Showers (a Saint Francis alum out of Northern Lebanon High School) and quickly fired it into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Nearly 10 minutes later, Caruso bagged his second score. Forward Haven Bruce sent a fine ball down the right slot for the streaking Caruso, who moved inside the area and cranked a right-footed drive over the keeper for the final 3-0 score.
