Cincinnati Kings News Release
HARRISBURG, PA (April 29) -- The Cincinnati Kings spoiled the season home opener for the Harrisburg City Islanders Saturday night with a 2-0 win on the road in United Soccer Leagues Second Division action. The City Islanders, a playoff team last season, are projected to be in the hunt for the Second Division title again this year.
The Kings wasted no time getting on the board, as former NKU standout Jeff Hughes scored in the 14th minute in the first half on a free kick from 20 yards out. Hughes scored again in the 25th minute, with the assist from Nowaf Jaman.
"I was very impressed with the way the team played in the first half," said Head Coach Jon Pickup. "We weren't quite as intense in the second half, but the big difference was, last year, if we struggled in a game, we rarely got a victory. This year, despite not playing our best, we still found a way to win."
The win gave the Kings a measure of revenge over Harrisburg from last year. The Kings were 0-2-2 against the City Islanders in 2005.
Kings goaltender Jordan James had another stellar game, facing 23 Harrisburg shots and recording 10 saves. The Kings recorded 14 shots on goal, with two saves for Harrisburg. The Kings' record is now 2-1-0. The City Islanders are 0-1-0.
"Jordan James was magnificent," said Pickup. "He basically won us the game."
After opening the 2006 season with three games on the road, the Cincinnati Kings play their home season opener on Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m. against the Western Mass Pioneers at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
