
Cincinnati Kings Qualify for U.S. Open Cup

CINCINNATI (May 31, 2006) - The Cincinnati Kings have qualified for the 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as a result of their 3-2-1 start. The Kings qualified for the second round with three other United Soccer Leagues (USL) Second Division teams and four First Division teams.
Six teams from the Second Division qualified for the Open Cup, including the Charlotte Eagles as the defending Second Division champion. The Open Cup standings are based on a percentage of points earned versus maximum points possible. Joining Charlotte from the USL Second Division are the Richmond Kickers (.72), New Hampshire Phantoms (.58), the Kings (.56), Wilmington Hammerheads (.40) and Pittsburgh Riverhounds (.40). The top four qualifiers enter the tournament in the second round while the bottom two enter in round one.
Second round play begins June 28 with opponents and locations to be determined. The first round begins on June 14 with Wilmington and Pittsburgh joining six teams from the Premier Development League (PDL), six USASA regional qualifiers and the winners of the two Qualifying Round matches between PDL and USASA teams.
The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the oldest cup competition in United States soccer and is among the oldest in the world. Open to all affiliated amateur and professional teams in the United States, the annual U.S. Open Cup is a 90-year-old single-elimination tournament. The Los Angeles Galaxy of the MLS won the U.S. Open Cup in 2005.
The Cincinnati Kings are currently in third place in the USL Second Division with 10 points and a 3-2-1 record. The Kings play this Saturday, June 3, at Xavier University at 7:00 p.m. versus the first-place Richmond Kickers.
