Cincinnati Kings End Win Drought With Victory At Pittsburgh
June 18, 2005 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Cincinnati Kings News Release
WASHINGTON, PA--The Cincinnati Kings end a month-long slump Saturday night with a 1-0 road win over the Pittsburgh Riverhounds in United Soccer Leagues action as Kings goalie Brian Schaeper picks up his first shutout win of the season.
The Kings scored the only goal of the game in the 87th minute, when a deflected Jeff Hughes shot ended up in front of Travis Sobers, who put it in for the score.
The two teams were locked up in a defensive battle most of the contest, with Pittsburgh having just two good looks at the net in the first half, and the Kings only one. The Kings dominated the second half, with two good scoring opportunities coming just before the game winner by Sobers.
"This was an important win for us," said Head Coach Jon Pickup. "We needed to get the points, and end the bad run."
The victory is the second for the Kings over the Riverhounds this season. The Kings defeated the Riverhounds, 2-1, on May 7 and fell to Pittsburgh 2-0 on May 28. The win was the first for the Kings since a 3-1 win over the New Hampshire Phantoms on May 14th. Since then, the Kings have had four losses and one tie. "This was a great team effort," said Pickup. "The whole squad contributed. It was a big win not only for the standings, but for team morale."
Cincinnati had 11 shots to Pittsburgh's six, and Kings' goalie Schaeper had four saves to Pittsburgh's nine. The win brings the Kings' season record to 4-4-3 in USL Second Division action.
The Kings return home next Friday night at 7:30 p.m. to face the Harrisburg City Islanders at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.
