Cicero Cometas USA News Release
On Wednesday, September 12, during a ceremony at Cicero Stadium, Town President Larry Dominick, town officials, Clyde Park District officials and staff, and Cicero residents were introduced to a professional basketball team that has chosen to call Cicero home: the Cicero Cometas of the American Basketball Association (ABA).
Javier Haggar, owner of the Cometas (pictured with framed jersey) and Michael Harris, coach of the Cometas, presented Dominick with an honorary jersey for his leadership in bringing the team to Cicero.
"I now have two professional sports teams to root for," said President Dominick. "the Chicago Cubs and the Cicero Cometas."
The Cometas feature several Chicago-area players including: Derek Molis, a St. Joe's of Westchester graduate who played at Loyola University-Chicago; Kenny Williams, a 1994 graduate of University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) and UIC's second all-time leading scorer; Cory Little, Top 50 high school guard from Addison Trail HS and a graduate of University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC),Gerardo Romero, who the Cometas found while scouting Cicero's 3-on-3 basketball tourney during Ceasefire Week this summer; and Nick Temen, a Morton H.S. graduate who played at the University of Georgia.
The ABA has gone through several iterations as a league but traces its history back to the glory days of the 1970s when such icons as Julius Erving, George Gervin, Dan Issel, and Marvin Barnes played in the league that made the red, white, and blue basketball famous.
The Cometas relocated from Mexico and will play their home games at Cicero Stadium (1909 S. Laramie). Tickets go on sale on October 5.

Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
