ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. â He is hockey's equivalent to the walk off home run, and he will be back in a New Mexico Scorpions jersey next season.
The New Mexico Scorpions announced late Tuesday night that Chris Richards has re-signed for the 2002-2003 season. Richards, who hails from Cornwall, Ontario, was named the team's Most Valuable Player last season after posting twenty-seven goals and thirty-nine assists for sixty-six points. Richards proved to be most prolific however in crunch time, where he posted an amazing ten game winning goals.
The fifth year pro, will provide a big boost to the New Mexico Scorpions offensively. He has scored eighty-six professional goals in four seasons to go along with one hundred and thirty-two career assists. Richards also enjoyed a productive four-year college career at Ohio State University.
"I had a fun year here last year", said Scorpions center Chris Richards. "I'm excited to play under Dunner (Pat Dunn) and Tiegs (Travis Van Tighem). I like the city and the fans, and I just hope we can make the playoffs next year and win a championship."
"How can you not be happy re-signing your MVP and a fan favorite", said Scorpions Head Coach Pat Dunn. "After what we've seen last year with his ten game winning goals, and for him to have the opportunity to play with Tyler (Baines) again, it makes me sleep a lot easier at night!"
