Allentown Ambassadors News Release

Chris Kelly took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, only to have Craig Lewis begin the inning with a single, but the Allentown Ambassadors still beat the Brockton Rox 4-1 Monday night in Brockton.

Kelly ended up with seven and a third innings pitched, allowing one run on two hits, with two walks and a strikeout. Rox starter Greg Salvahold also pitched well, but the Ambassadors would get three off of him in the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth, Jason Williams singled with two outs, followed by a Ben Rosenthal single. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, then Cedrick Harris hit an infield single to drive home Williams and give the Ambassadors the lead. In the sixth, Marlon Roche reached on an error on shortstop Saul Bustos with one out, then Brian Macchi doubled. With runners at second and third, Greg Schmidt then singled up the middle to drive in two and give the Ambassadors the 3-0 lead.

The Ambassadors would add a run in the top of the eighth inning, when Vic Davilla hit a solo home run off reliever Fontella Jones. It was Davilla's sixteenth home run of the season. He is now just two home runs shy of tying the career Northeast League record currently held by Jon Mueller.

The lone Rox run came in the eighth, when Kelly left after giving up back-to-back singles to Lewis and Francisco Matos to start the inning. Justin Keeling came in and threw two wild pitches to allow Lewis to score, but got the last two outs in the inning without any further damage, and pitched a perfect ninth inning to close out the game.

Kelly got the win, he is now 4-2, while Salvahold got his first loss, he is 0-1. Keeling picked up his third save of the season. Schmidt finished the game 2-4 with two RBI for the Ambassadors. The win is the third in a row for the Ambassadors, and the fourth in the team's last five games. The two teams play the second game of the three game series tomorrow night, with John Dillinger taking the mound for Allentown.
