CHL Names November's Best
December 5, 2002 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Central Hockey League has today announced the recipients of both the Player of the Month and Goaltender of the Month for November, 2002. Both award winners come from Conference leading clubs, with Todd Marcellus of the Tulsa Oilers earning CHL Player of the Month honors, and Matt Barnes of the Austin Ice Bats honored as the Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Month.
The Northern Conference leading Oilers posted a remarkable record of 13-1-0 in November, due in large part to the play of the speedy Marcellus, a left winger from Chesterville, Ontario. Marcellus scored in all but two contests during November, and enjoyed six two-goal games while leading the CHL with 24 points during the month. For the season, Marcellus leads all CHL scorers with 17 goals, sits tied for 2nd in the scoring race with 32 points, and is behind only teammate Jamie Steer in leading the CHL in plus/minus with +19. Marcellus is in his 6th year of professional hockey following an outstanding four-year collegiate career at McGill University.
The Southern Conference front running Austin Ice Bats have to be thrilled with the performance of goaltender Matt Barnes this season. Signed as a free agent in the off-season, Barnes has excelled in leading Austin to a record of 15-2-1 to begin the season. In November, Barnes posted a tremendous record of 9-2-1 for the Ice Bats, with three victories coming via shutouts. His save percentage of 94.5 led all CHL netminders, and he allowed more than two goals in a game just once in 12 outings. Barnes is also at or near the top of every major goaltending category this season, leading the CHL with a 1.43 goals against average and a 94.8 save percentage, while sitting second in victories (13) and shutouts (4).
