CHL Launches Junior Reporter Program

Published on August 26, 2003 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Central Hockey League has today announced the creation of the CHL Junior Reporter Program, which will give youngsters aged 8 through 16 an opportunity to attend and report on CHL games throughout the season. The program was first developed in the 1999/2000 season, and is being re-instated for the coming season of play in the CHL.

Interested participants can apply for one of six "Junior Reporter" slots in each CHL city, with six pre-determined dates available. Those selected, along with an accompanying adult will receive a pair of tickets to the game, a tour of the arena, an opportunity to meet with team beat writers, will view the game from the press box, and interview a player or coach following the contest. Where possible, CHL Junior Reporters will also be interviewed on the team's radio broadcast. Once their game is complete, Junior Reporters will file their article (and pictures of their experience if possible) on the Central Hockey League website. An effort will also be made in each city to publish all or portions of each submitted article with a local market newspaper.

"We received tremendous feedback from past participants in the "Junior Reporter" program, and felt it important to continue to encourage interested youngsters in learning more about the duties and responsibilities of media members as they cover our member teams," said CHL President Brad Treliving. "In addition, it makes for extremely interesting reading for all of our on-line fans once the articles are submitted."

Those interested in applying for a CHL Junior Reporter position, or for more details about the program, are encouraged to visit the CHL online at www.centralhockeyleague.com.

The Central Hockey League begins its' 12th season of play October 16th with 17 teams (including the expansion Colorado Eagles and Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees) in eight states, and is the only minor pro hockey league in North America to show consecutive attendance increases the past two seasons, finishing with an average per-game attendance of 4,401 in 2002-2003.
