Chill To Honor Local Sports Legend
April 7, 2008 - International Basketball League (IBL)
Edmonton Chill News Release
On Friday May 23rd, 2008 the Edmonton Chill will honor the legendary Al Coates for his three decades of work in the sports community here in the City of Champions. Edmonton's Mr. Baseball will be presented with a commemorative plaque as well as several other gifts in a pre-game ceremony just before the Chill tip-off their seventh game of the season, and the first of their two-game series with the Snohomish Explosion.
Chill owner, Troy Barns, felt that since this summer would be the first since the mid-seventies without Al's unmistakeable voice bringing baseball to Edmonton listeners, it was the perfect time to recognize him for everything he has done for the local sports community. Chill Asst. GM Nick Padow said, "Whether it was baseball, hockey, or basketball, you can't think of radio sports broadcasting without thinking of Al. We believe there should be a place for him in the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, and hopefully an event like this will get that ball rolling."
"Edmonton is a great sports town and its time that we had basketball returning to the city. The Chill seems to have put their team together the right way and it looks like they should have some real success. I am honoured by the gesture from the team," said the legendary Mr. Coates.
