Chill Continue to Build Roster

September 24, 2013 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
St. Charles Chill News Release

St. Charles, Mo. - St. Charles Chill General Manager/Head Coach Jamie Rivers has announced three additions to the inaugural roster. Second-year pros Mike Lysyj(6' 4", 205 lbs) and Ryan Berard (6' 2", 190 lbs) are expected to provide some scoring and toughness up front while rookie defenseman Thomas Ward-Cardinal(5' 11", 185 lbs) should add offensive punch from the blue line as well. The Chill now have 13 players signed for the upcoming season.

"All three of these guys are going to come in here and compete right away," said Rivers of the new additions. "A couple of them (Lysyj and Berard) got their first taste of pro hockey last season and I look forward to working with all three to build on their tremendous potential."

Lysyj began his professional career last season in the ECHL with the Orlando Solar Bears where he played in just six games following his four-year career at Cortland. Lysyj (pronounced Lee-see) led the Red Dragons in scoring last season with a career-high 33 points on a team-best 18 goals and 15 assists in 25 games. In 96 career games, Lysyj totaled 77 points on 39 goals and 38 assists. Prior to joining Cortland, Lysyj played one season with the South Shore Kings of the Eastern Junior Hockey League (EJHL) where he posted 11 goals and 17 assists in 43 games.

Berard will bring plenty of toughness and leadership to the Chill's front line this season. Prior to joining the Orlando Solar Bears (ECHL) for his rookie season last year, the 26-year-old Berard played five seasons at Carleton University where he was named a co-captain for his senior season. Berard tallied 122 points during his collegiate career with the Ravens after spending the previous seven years in the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Berard played just 12 games last year with the Solar Bears, scoring two goals and adding as assist to go along with nine penalty minutes.

Ward-Cardinal joins the Chill for his rookie season after posting the best statistical season of his junior hockey career last season with the OCN Blizzard of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League (MJHL). The defenseman tallied 15 goals and added 18 assists in 27 games with the Blizzard. In addition to adding some offensive punch from the blue line, the 21-year-old plays bigger than his size (5' 11", 185lbs) when locking down the defensive zone, racking up 333 penalty minutes in 173 career games between the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and the MJHL.

The Chill will begin their inaugural season in the Central Hockey League on October 19th at the Family Arena with a FREE preseason game scheduled for October 11 th. Season tickets are currently on sale now and start at under $10 per game (33 home games).
