Chicago to Host 2017 NHL Draft

Published on February 11, 2016 under United States Hockey League (USHL) News Release

The National Hockey League announced today at a press conference that the 2017 NHL Draft will be held in Chicago, IL, home of the Chicago Blackhawks and United States Hockey League. It will be the first time that the NHL Draft has been hosted in Chicago, and will come during the NHL's centennial.

The announcement comes one year after no junior league in the world had more players selected in the NHL Draft than the USHL.

"We're excited that the city of Chicago was selected as the host city for the 2017 NHL Draft," said Bob Fallen, USHL president and commissioner, and Glen Ellyn, IL native. "The Chicago Blackhawks have drafted more USHL players over the last 10 years than any other NHL club and the Blackhawks organization continues to be a great supporter of our league. The United Center is right down the street from our league headquarters and we're looking forward to having the eyes of the hockey world opened to the tremendous enthusiasm for hockey in this market."

Chicago is not just home to the USHL headquarters but also the Chicago Steel (USHL) located in Geneva, IL. In the team's 15-year history a total of 12 players have been selected in the NHL Draft. Chicago is also home to notable youth teams Chicago Mission (HPHL), Team Illinois (HPHL), Chicago Fury (T1EHL) and Chicago Young Americans (HPHL), all of which have made significant contributions in the development of players to the USHL.
