August 24, 2009 - The Chicago Blaze are pleased to announce the signings of local hometown players Joe Pace and Arik Lebda. Terms of the contracts are not released.
The 24 year old Pace, a native of Schaumburg, Illinois will see his first full season of play for both Chicago and in the AAHL after playing last season with the Flint Generals in the AA International Hockey League. The 5'11", 190 Pace is excited about returning home to play pro hockey and is welcoming the challenge of being one of the leaders of the sophomore Blaze franchise. About the projected number one defenseman, owner Aaron Mattey states, "Joe Pace brings that professional experience and maturity we need and the leadership we were looking for. His local connections are a real asset as we look to recruit in this area and develop our fan base. Defensively, Joe will be a leader and a top player for us with his proven experience and secondly, being a hometown guy will help us immensely as we market our team to this community".
The other "hometown hero" Chicago has signed is Arik Lebda. Arik, 25 who will join Pace on Chicago's defensive roster is a native of Buffalo Grove and saw his first taste of pro action last year with the Blaze playing 7 games in the inaugural season. Of the the 5' 11" local product Mattey says, "Arik is another key signing for the Blaze, as we know his skill and defensive abilities are fundamental to having a strong D core. He's a great fit for us as a solid defensive player and he is well known in the local hockey community".
Arik, Joe and the other Blaze players to take to the ice on October 12th as training camp officially opens at the West Meadows Arena. Fans can meet these players as all sessions are free and open to the public. Exciting AAHL action starts on Saturday October 24th as the Blaze host the Detroit Hitmen.
