Chesapeake Bayhawks News Release
Annapolis, MD - Veteran goalie Kip Turner announced Thursday that he is retiring from Major League Lacrosse (MLL) play. Turner spent nine seasons in the MLL, first with the Boston Cannons, and playing his final four seasons with the Chesapeake Bayhawks.
"Kip will go down as one of the best goalies in the history of the MLL," stated Bayhawks Head Coach, Brian Reese. "If I could describe Kip in one word, it would be 'winner.' He has won on every level, including three championships in the MLL, two of those with the Bayhawks. Kip is a great teammate and consummate professional. We will miss Kip, but appreciate all he has done for the organization and wish him luck in his career. He will always be part of the Bayhawks family."
An Annapolis, Maryland, native, Turner was a three-sport star at Severn School before continuing his lacrosse career at the University of Virginia. At UVA, Turner played in 49 games, earning All-American and All-ACC selection in 2007.
After his illustrious collegiate career, Turner was selected second overall by the Boston Cannons in the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft. Turner posted an 18-10 record and was the 2010 Warrior Goalkeeper of the Year, followed by an MLL Championship Title with the Cannons in 2011.
Turner's Cannons career concluded when the Bayhawks selected him in the 2011 MLL Expansion Draft. He immediately stepped in as the team's primary goalie during the 2012 championship season and boasted a 7-4 record and a 10.51 goals against average. During Chesapeake's 2013 title year, Turner generated a career performance, finishing with an 8-5 record in a career-high 13 games played.
"Kip always played his best on the biggest stage at the end of the year," recalls Bayhawks President, Dave Cottle. "In his last two championship games, he led our whole defensive unit to an outstanding performance. That is how he got his nickname, Mr. August."
Overall, Turner appeared in 69 games during his career, ending his MLL run with a 35-23 record, 878 saves and an 11.79 goals against average.
