Chastain Named Player of the Week

June 17, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release

ATLANTA (Monday, June 17, 2002) - San Jose CyberRays star Brandi Chastain has been selected as the WUSA's Player of the Week for the week ending June 16, 2002. The versatile Chastain scored two goals and drew the call that resulted in the game-winning penalty kick in San Jose's 4-3 win over New York on June 15 at Spartan Stadium. Chastain's performance resulted in her being named the league's player of the week for the first time in her WUSA career.

Chastain started the match on defense, playing the entire first half at right back in a 5-3-2 formation. Because of injuries to other players, she was shifted to forward in a 4-3-3 in the second half and had a major impact on San Jose's victory.

After moving up to forward in the second half, Chastain scored in the 66th minute, 70th minute and was fouled from behind in the penalty box in the 88th minute to set up Katia's game-winning penalty kick. It was the second multi-goal game of Chastain's WUSA career, the previous one being in a 4-2 loss to the Boston Breakers on May 16, 2001.

The U.S. national team veteran, who has three goals and one assist for seven points in 2002, was the keynote speaker at the California State Capitol in Sacramento today at a ceremony commemorating the 30th anniversary of the passage of Title IX.

Chastain, who had 17 points in the voting (5 of the 17 first-place votes), outdistanced New York's Tiffeny Milbrett (15 pts.), Washington's Mia Hamm (12 pts.) and Freedom rookie Abby Wambach (7 pts.) in one of the closest votes of the season. The WUSA's Player of the Week is selected every Monday throughout the regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association.
