The Charlotte Sting have signed 6'0 guard/forward Sheri Sam, it was announced today by General Manager and Head Coach Trudi Lacey. A six-year WNBA veteran and unrestricted free agent, Sam posted 9.1 points and 4.1 rebounds to help lead the Seattle Storm to the WNBA Championship last season.
"Sheri brings with her athleticism, versatility and the knowledge of how to win at the highest level in this league," said Lacey. "We look forward to bringing that competitive edge to our team."
Prior to joining Seattle, Sam spent one season with the Minnesota Lynx and three with the Miami Sol after beginning her WNBA career with the Orlando Miracle in 1999. In 195 career games, Sam has posted 12.1 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.5 assists. She was named a WNBA Eastern Conference All-Star in 2002 and is one of just 30 players in league history to record 2,000 career points.
In addition, Sam played three seasons with the San Jose Lasers and was twice named an All-Star in the now-defunct American Basketball League (ABL).
A 1996 graduate of Vanderbilt University, Sam ranks among school leaders in almost every category and guided her teams to four NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 1993 Final Four. Her collegiate honors include being named First-Team All-SEC, All-Tournament All-Midwest Region and Kodak All-American as a senior.
It marks the second roster move in the last three days for the Charlotte Sting, who also hold the top pick in the 2005 WNBA Draft later this Spring. On Friday, Lacey announced that the team orchestrated a sign-and-trade deal with the Minnesota Lynx, obtaining point guard Helen Darling and a second round draft pick (#24 overall) in exchange for the Sting's second round draft pick (#17 overall).
"Acquiring veteran players such as Sheri Sam and Helen Darling speak to our commitment to rebuilding our team and to putting ourselves in a position to win a WNBA Championship in the very near future," said Lacey. "It is an ongoing process but we now have two very important pieces to the puzzle, which already consists of a talented mix of players as well as the #1 draft pick. Both players bring WNBA experience and proven success, and we are very excited to have them on board."
