Charleston loses to Rochester

Charleston, SC.- The Charleston Battery lost to the Rochester Raging Rhinos tonight at Blackbaud Stadium by a score of two goals to one. Battery goalkeeper Mike Behonick recorded six saves including a penalty stop but Rochester prevailed with two second-half strikes.

With the loss Charleston drops to a record of 5-9-3, 18 points and remains in 8th position in the USL First Division. Rochester improves to 7-5-1, 22 points, good for second position in the league.

In the 21st minute Rochester were awarded a penalty-kick after Battery defender Lazo Alavanja was adjudged to have pushed a Rochester forward in the box. Midfielder Stoian Mladenov took the spot-kick but was denied by Behonick diving to his right.

Rochester opened the scoring in the 50th minute. The ball was slipped through the middle to former Battery midfielder John Ball. Ball ran to the top of the box and stroked a shot past Behonick into the goal.

Three minutes later the Rhinos doubled their lead. Forward Maura Carabajal swept the ball to the back of the penalty area to forward Jonathon Bolonas. Bolonas controlled the pass then fired into the bottom left-hand corner.

Charleston pulled a goal back in the 55th minute through a set-piece. Midfielder Ugo Okoye played a corner into the near post. Forward Greg Simmonds s threw himself at the ball and turned it inside the near post with a flick-header.

The Battery had a chance to tie the game in the 72nd minute but Simmonds headed high as he stretched to reach substitute midfielder Troy Lesesne's cross.
