Changes Made to WUSA Stats

ATLANTA (Friday, November 8, 2002) - The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) announced today corrections made to the leagues statistics for the 2001 and 2002 season. The changes are the result of a game footage audit done by the Elias Sports Bureau, Inc., the official statisticians of the WUSA.

Since 1913, the Elias Sports Bureau has provided historical research and statistical services in the field of professional sports. Clients of the Elias Sports Bureau include all the major professional sports leagues in North America, television networks, newspapers and other publications, as well as other providers of new media and web sites.

For nearly the entire 2002 season, members of the Elias Sports Bureau have been reviewing each and every game tape for both the 2001 and 2002 season in an attempt to correct or catch any statistical mistakes that may have occurred over the first two season of the WUSA.

The changes made to the WUSA statistics have altered a few results among the league leaders.

The biggest change has affected the record for most points scored in a season. Entering the 2002 season, New York's Tiffeny Milbrett held the record for most points in a season (35) in 2001. Initially, San Jose's Katia ended the 2002 season with 35 points (15g, 5a). However, after reviewing the game tapes it had been discovered that an assist recorded by Katia was missed in 2002; thus the Brazilian international had 36 points in 2002; the most in a single season.

The changes also affected the 2001 assist leader in the WUSA. Originally, Boston's Kristine Lilly and San Jose's (then Bay Area) Sissi were tied for the league lead in assists (10). After changes were made, Lilly was credited with recording 12 assists in 2001 while Sissi registered nine. Lilly currently holds the all-time WUSA mark in assists with 25.

All corrected stats will be made available on the league's official web site www.WUSA.com on Monday, November 11.

May 12, Boston at Washington The order of assists on Washington's Pretinha's goal in the (54') has been reversed; Pretinha (Tracey Milburn, Lindsay Stoecker), 54'.

May 13, Philadelphia at New York New York's Kerry Connors's goal was scored at 59', not 58'.

May 16, Boston at Bay Area Bay Area's Brandi Chastain's first goal was scored at 62', not 63'.

May 19, Washington at Carolina 1) The secondary assist on Freedom forward Pretinha's goal (8') was Bai Jie, not Tracey Milburn; Pretinha (Michelle French, Bai Jie), 8'. 2) Carolina's Mikka Hansen's goal was at 50', not 49'.

May 27, Washington at New York A secondary assist has been credited to Washington's Michelle French on Bai Jie's goal (3'); Bai Jie (Pretinha, Michelle French), 8'.

May 31, Philadelphia at Washington Philadelphia's Liu Ailing's goal was scored at 50', not 51'

June 3, Washington at Philadelphia 1) Philadelphia's Erin Martin had the only assist on Liu Ailing's goal (2'); an assist was taken away from Laurie Schwoy; Liu Ailing (Erin Martin), 2'. 2) Washington's Michelle French had the only assist on Pretinha's goal (49'); an assist was taken away from Mia Hamm; Pretinha (Michelle French), 49'.
