Charlotte Hounds News Release
BOSTON, MA - The Charlotte Hounds on Saturday night won their first road game of the 2016 season, topping the Boston Cannons 17-14 at Harvard Stadium. The win solidified a season sweep for the Hounds, who also beat the Cannons 15-12 in Week 1 at American Legion Memorial Stadium. Mike Chanenchuk was named Coca-Cola Player of the game, following a five-point performance that included a 2-point goal.
The first quarter was a high scoring affair for both teams. The Cannons opened the scoring almost immediately, as Joe Nardella won the opening faceoff and dished to Josh Hawkins who took the ball straight to the cage. Chanenchuk tied the game one minute later with a shot on the run. Unfortunately for the Hounds, Michael Ehrhardt was called for slashing and Max Seibald capitalized with a 2-point goal on the man-up. But the Hounds responded with a three-goal run to take a 4-3 advantage with just under 10 minutes to play in the quarter. The teams continued to trade goals, but David Emala scored on the power play with 17 seconds left in the first to give the home team a 7-6 advantage after 15 minutes.
Action began to settle in the second quarter, as it took just over six minutes before Hawkins forced a turnover and put the home team in front 8-6. However, the visitors stole momentum and scored three straight - including Pat Young's first MLL career goal - to take a 9-8 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. But the Cannons got the last shot, as Mike Begley found Emala at a tough angle to tie the game 9-9 going into the break.
Mitch Belisle gave the Hounds an early man-up possession in the third following an illegal body check, and a generous amount of offensive passing led to a John Haus goal and 10-9 lead for the visitors. Less than two minutes later, Cannons goalie Tyler Fiorito made a key save and cleared the ball, which led to a Brent Adams transition goal. Nardella won the ensuing faceoff and took the ball to the cage himself, putting the Cannons back in front 11-10. But an incredible individual effort from Joe McCallion tied the game once again, thanks to an assist by Joey Sankey.
The Hounds kept the momentum rolling into the fourth quarter, as Chanenchuk ripped a 2-point goal off the faceoff and McCallion followed with his third of the night to give the Hounds their largest lead of the game, 14-11, with just over 12 minutes remaining to play. But the Cannons responded almost immediately, scoring three goals - including two from Brodie Merrill - in less than two minutes to tie the game 14-14.
Charlotte countered with a three-goal run of their own to close out the game and preserve a 17-14 victory. Charlie Cipriano made a season-high 20 saves and the defense held Will Manny scoreless for the first time all year.
The Hounds (4-3) remain on the road for another week, facing the winless Florida Launch (0-6) at FAU Stadium on June 18 at 7:00pm ET, before returning home to American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday, June 25 to take on expansion club the Atlanta Blaze at 7:30pm ET.
