SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Wednesday, December 3, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions have retained a vital piece of their 2014 North American Soccer League (NASL) Championship squad. Midfield maestro Rafael Castillo has re-signed with the club for two years with a team option for a third year, announced Head Coach Alen Marcina and President/General Manager Howard Cornfield today.

"We could not be more thrilled to have Rafa signed to be the centerpiece of our midfield for the next few years," said Cornfield. "He is clearly one of the best players in our league, but as good as he is on the pitch, he's an even better person off of it."

The Colombian native opened the scoring in the Championship Final with an audacious bicycle kick that has captivated the soccer world. Later in the match, Castillo set up the game and Soccer Bowl-winning goal with a long through ball to teammate Billy Forbes.

"I am very happy with the opportunity that God has given me to continue with the team and very committed to trying to have another successful season, " said Castillo. "I am very happy with the Scorpions and with the beautiful people of San Antonio; I hope to give them the best of me once again."

Castillo joined the Scorpions at the beginning of the 2014 NASL Fall Season, but quickly established himself as one of the most indispensable players in the league. In the regular season, Castillo led the Scorpions in goals with seven, added two assists, was named to the NASL Team of the Week four times, was NASL Player of the Week once, was the NASL Player of the Month for July, became a Golden Ball finalist and made the league's Best XI team; all in spite of making only 17 appearances.

Prior to joining the Scorpions, Castillo played for numerous Colombian teams including Deportivo Tolima, Real Cartagena and Millionarios. He also played for the most popular team in Egypt, Al-Ahly. He was a part of the 2004 Independiente Medellin championship team and earned caps for his native Colombian National team in 2002-03.

The Scorpions will defend their championship when the NASL Spring Season kicks off in April of 2015. For information on Scorpions season tickets call 210-495-8686 or visit sascorpions.com.
