Atlanta Silverbacks News Release
The home season for the Atlanta Silverbacks Men ended on September 2, but RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium continues to draw huge crowds to watch great soccer. Hundreds of fans gathered at the stadium last Saturday night (10.7) to watch the semi-finals of the Atlanta Silverbacks Champions League brought to you by McDonalds. Four of Atlanta's best male amateur teams played for a chance to make it to the championship match; Future Stars Premier and Real Tapatio will play in the finals this Saturday (10.14) and fight for the title of champion, along with the city's largest amateur prize purse - $15,000.
In the first semi-final match, Real Tapatio beat Super Estrella 1-0 in a close game that required two overtime periods and penalty kicks to determine the outcome. Super Estrella stepped up to the penalty spot first to begin the five shot competition. Super Estrella's first shooter missed his shot and the team was never able to recover the one goal deficit. Each of the remaining players on both teams made their shots and the shootout ended 5-4 in favor of Real Tapatio.
In the second semi-final match, Future Stars Premier beat Pozahualco 4-3 in a high-scoring, nail-biting match that came down to the final minutes. Future Stars Premier dominated the first half, going ahead 3-0. Pozahualco, in their first Champions League appearance, got back into the game in the second half and cut into Future Stars Premier's lead. Pozahualco scored their third goal in the 82nd minute, continuing to attempt the comeback with a shot off the crossbar and some close calls in the final eight minutes. Despite the valiant effort by Pozahualco, the game ended 4-3 in favor of Future Stars Premier.
The Atlanta Silverbacks Champions League, sponsored by McDonalds, Cingular Wireless, Western Union, Best Mexico, Infinity Insurance, Frito Lay, Mundo Hispanico, and Viva 105.7, aims to offer the best teams in Atlanta amateur soccer the opportunity and venue to compete against each other. The Champions League, the first of its kind in Atlanta, has been very successful in its second season, drawing the top local competition and large crowds to Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
The finals will be held on Saturday, October 14 at 9:00 pm with the match between Real Tapatio and Future Stars Premier. The consolation match for third place and $2,500 will be played at 7:00 pm when Super Estrella takes on Pozahualco. The night will include free 2006 Atlanta Silverbacks Champions League official t-shirts for the first 1,000 fans and a fireworks show between the final match and the consolation match.
