CFL Canadian Football League

CFL names players of the week

Published on July 20, 2004 under Canadian Football League (CFL) News Release

Offensive Player of the Week

QB - Anthony Calvillo #13

Montreal Alouettes

Highlights

Outstanding Quarterback play that saw him throw 30/41 complete passes for 344 passing yards and 3 touchdowns with no big mistakes.

Game Notes:

I liked his competitiveness, his accuracy and his quick reads of the defense. Anthony's effectiveness was remarkable. He got the ball into the places it needed to be to make the plays. Perhaps what he did better than most was deliver a soft catchable ball. His touch on the ball was exceptional.

1st Runner Up: Troy Davis #32, Hamilton Tiger-Cats

2nd Runner Up: Robert Baker #88, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Defensive Player of the Week

DB - Almondo Curry #22

Montreal Alouettes

Highlights

Outstanding defensive back play that included two interceptions, three tackles and two knock-downs.

Game Notes:

Curry played the Alouettes ‘high-risk, high reward" defence almost flawlessly. After being a step late on the Stampeders' first score, he was right on time thereafter and made plays all over the field. He was a devastating hitter and played smart, instinctive football. His game long effort was also impressive. He was hitting just as hard in the games dying moments as he was at the start.

1st Runner Up: Malcolm Frank #10, Edmonton Eskimos

2nd Runner Up: Michael O'Shea #50, Toronto Argonauts

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Lineman of the Week

DL - Noah Cantor #92

Toronto Argonauts

Highlights

Physically dominating defensive line play with two sacks for a loss of 13 yards, four tackles (one for a loss of 2 yards) and one knock-down.

Game Notes:

Cantor played a physically dominating type of game and was responsible for at least two holding penalties. This came against a very good offensive line. He used speed and power to get the job done. I was most impressed with the powerful push he used at the point of attack.

1st Runner Up: Nate Davis #98, Saskatchewan Roughriders

2nd Runner Up: Uzooma Okeke #53, Montreal Alouettes

Judge: Ellison Kelly

Special Teams Player of the Week

WR - Winston October #9

Edmonton Eskimos

Highlights

Outstanding kick returns (six). October returned one missed field goal for 104 yards and a touchdown, and a kick-off return for 43 yards.

Game Notes:

If you were to read the stat sheet for this game, it would appear to be an even contest with an edge to the Tiger-Cats. In reality, it was not even close. The difference here was October's kick returns that gave his team a short field. His ability to avoid tacklers in the open field was outstanding. He was the prototype of what a kick returner in the CFL should be.

1st Runner Up: Keith Stokes #3, Winnipeg Blue Bombers

2nd Runner Up: Matt Kellett #11, Montreal Alouettes

Judge: Ellison Kelly
