Central League recap 7-7-05
Published on July 7, 2005 under Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release
FORT WORTH 13, PENSACOLA 8 @ Fort Worth, Texas. Time: 3:00 ATT: 2,186 W: Ryan Weems (7-2) L: Jeff Norris (4-2) S: None HR: PEN - Carlos Mendoza (6), Nestor Smith (8) FW - Terence Green (7)
Nothing about this game would stand out as long as you ignored the fourth inning. Eight perfectly normal innings of baseball both before and after it, but really, the fun is in the extraordinary inning of baseball sandwiched between the third and fifth, where Fort Worth exploded for too many runs to fit in a box score. Not to be mistaken for a pitchers' duel, the Cats blew the doors open with ten runs in the fourth, driven largely by an offensive performance buoyed by three different batters with 3-RBI performances on the night. Nine Cats scored in the game, seven Cats amassed hits, and six collected RBI in the almost instantaneous rout of the Pelicans.
SHREVEPORT 4, JACKSON 3 @ Shreveport, La. Time: 2:44 ATT: 1,177 W: Leo Tyson (1-0) L: Javier Martinez (0-3) S: Carl Makowsky (3) HR: SHR - Dalphie Correa (1)
Shreveport served as the only example that even slow and steady can win you a few ball games. While the Sports never scored more than one run in aninning, they put together four straight innings with a score and bested Jackson 4-3. The Senators took a brief 3-2 lead in the seventh, but failed to answer the continuous Shreveport effort which produced no jump-off-the-page performances, just solid team offense and the best outcome they could have hoped for - Win number four in a row.
EDINBURG 6, SAN ANGELO 1 @ Edinburg, Texas. Time: 2:22 ATT: 3,334 W: Julio Ruiz (5-3) L: Joldy Watts (5-5) S: None HR: EDI - John Ballon (1)
Edinburg tattooed San Angelo's pitching in the second inning, going off for six runs that would go unanswered until the fifth. When the answer came it was barely a peep, as the Colts mustered just one run in response to the Roadrunner barrage, falling to Edinburg 6-1. The oadrunners got a surprise out of 3B John Ballon, who blasted a three-run home run in his first Central League career at-bat, finishing 1-3 for the game. On the other side of the ball, P Julio Ruiz was solid in seven innings of work for Edinburg, yielding just one run on four hits and a walk for his fifth win of the year.
EL PASO 9, COASTAL BEND 4 @ Robstown, Texas. Time: 2:52 ATT: 1,863 W: Juan A. Pena (3-0) L: Jose Luis Lopez (4-6) S: None HR: ELP - Juan Camacho 2 (12,13)
Juan A. Pena held the Coastal Bend bats to a whisper, and the Diablos' offense screamed like a bat out of hell as El Paso took an early 9-2 lead and ended up with the 9-4 win over the Aviators. El Paso took advantage of a hot night from Juan Camacho, who hit two big home runs and three RBI, and strong supporting performances from RF Carlos Sepulveda and SS Josh Fulton, who each finished with two RBI, as their offense rolled for the second night in a row. Fulton had a fantastic all-around game for the Diablos, getting two hits, scoring two runs, stealing two bases, and driving in two RBI. As for Sepulveda, he finished 0-4, yet collected two RBI on a sacrifice grounder and a bases-loaded walk.
