Published on August 15, 2005 under Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release
SportsTicker, the official statistician of the Central League, has selected Jackson OF Vince Faison and Fort Worth LHP Ryan Weems as Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for the week of August 8-14.
Faison went 10-for-22 with two home runs, two triples and six RBI as Jackson was 3-3 on the week. Friday was the Lyons, Ga., native's best night of the week as he went 3-for-4 with two round-trippers and five RBI in the Senators' 8-1 victory over Coastal Bend. Also the league player of the week for the week of June 12, Faison leads the league with 11 triples and is second in the league with a .595 slugging percentage, to go along with a .306 average and fifteen home runs.
Originally a first-round draft pick of San Diego in 1999, Faison, 23, spent five seasons in the Padres organization, reaching as high as AA Mobile in 2002 and 2003. After the 2003 season, he was shipped to the Seattle organization, and played with four different clubs, including AAA Tacoma, in 2004. 2005 is Faison's first season in independent baseball.
Weems was excellent in his outing on Thursday, giving up no runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings of work in Fort Worth's 11-1 victory over Edinburg. The 24-year-old is currently second in the CBL with a 3.28 ERA, second with 120 strikeouts and is tied for fourth with nine wins.
The Roswell, N.M., native is in his second season of professional baseball after playing college ball at TCU and New Mexico State. Last season with the Cats, Weems went 5-2 with a 4.22 ERA in twelve starts, striking out 49 in 53.1 innings of work.
