Central Illinois Bested by Sioux City in the Shootout

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - The Central Illinois Flying Aces could not crack the Sioux City Musketeers during the shootout's eighth round, falling 2 to 1.
Mitchell Gibson (Phoenixville, Penn.) was in net for Central Illinois tonight. He was a brick wall for the first period stopping all thirteen shots he faced including a kick-save with his left pad to keep things scoreless.
Sioux City finally broke through midway through the second period. The Musketeers took advantage of the puck movement from behind the net and put a flurry of shots on Gibson. He stopped several until Albin Nilsson gathered the puck with his back to the net and scored between his legs.
On a Sioux City power play, late in the second, Gibson stopped a series of shots in the crease and shortly after, Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) had a short-handed chance that was stopped by the Musketeers' netminder.
Stephen Halliday (Toronto, Ont.) had a breakaway chance late in the second period after he outmuscled two Sioux City defenders at the blue line, but it went off the crossbar.
The Flying Aces tied the game midway through the third period. John Driscoll (Littleton, Colo.) kept the puck away from a Musketeer near his own goal line. Driscoll fired the puck off the boards to exit and Janicke took off. The Central Illinois captain out-hustled two Sioux City players on the way to the puck. He one-timed it from the goal line and it trickled past the goaltender five-hole for a tie game.
Sixty minutes was not enough and the game went to overtime. Despite exchanging several chances, neither team could score.
Each team scored in the first round of the shootout. After that the goalies lock it down, with neither allowing a goal in the next six rounds. Sioux City finally broke through in the eighth round, and Central Illinois was not able to match, for a final of 2 to 1.
Gibson finished with thirty-two saves on thirty-three shots.
Tomorrow night, the Flying Aces finish off the weekend series against the Musketeers at Grossinger Motors Arena at 4:07 p.m. Next weekend, Central Illinois travels to Fargo to take on the Force in a two-game series on March 22 and 23.
