PATRICK O'HERRON NAMED NEW HEAD COACH OF BUTTE DAREDEVILS

After the sudden retirement of Butte Daredevils head coach Scott Carson, the Daredevils have announced that his assistant coach, Patrick O'Herron, will take over as the team's head coach. Last year, O'Herron guided the Southern California Legends (ABA) to their league championship game. O'Herron's wife Terri has been hired as the team's general manager, replacing the departing George Polich.

SHAUN FOUNTAIN NAMED CBA PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The Continental Basketball Association today announced that Shaun Fountain has been named the Player of the Week for the week of January 2 - January 7. This is a first a member of the Indiana Alley Cats franchise has been so honored.

Fountain has been a steady force for the Alley Cats all season long. Fountain is currently second in the CBA in scoring (23.2), third in assists (6.2), and first in steals (3) per game. The Alley Cats are on a four game winning streak and have moved to second place in the American Conference, largely because of Fountain's play.

In his first game of the week, Fountain had 34 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in a 117-105, 7-0 sweep of Minot. Shawn was 11/19 from the field and 3/6 from behind the arc for Indiana. The Alley Cats were off to Pittsburgh and Fountain again led the way with 27 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 110-105 win. Fountain finished the week at home, as the Alley Cats hosted conference rival Minot. Down one, Fountain hit a reverse lay-up with seven seconds left in regulation to put the Indiana ahead for good, 112-111. Fountain scored 34 points, and had 7 rebounds and 4 assists for the Alley Cats.

With the win, the Alley Cats finished the week 3-0 and moved ahead of Minot to capture second place in the American Conference. Fountain averaged 31.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 4.3 assists, and 2 steals per game on the week for Indiana.

Other players receiving consideration were:

T.J. Thompson, Albany

Nick VanderLaan, Butte

Jamar Howard, Great Falls

Albany Patroons (12-3, 71.0 QP, 4.73 AVG, 1st place, American Conference)

After winning their New Year's Day contest against the Pittsburgh Xplosion, the Albany Patroons had only one contest this week - a January 3rd matchup in Mellon Arena against the Xplosion. The Pats' 136-129 [5-2] win that night helped cement the Pats' American Division leading 12-3 record. T.J. Thompson scored 30 points and distributed 12 assists in the game; while Jamario Moon garnered 12 rebounds. The win proved a season-long comeback for the 12-3 Patroons, who at this time last season sported a puny 5-14 record.

Butte Daredevils (5-8, 39.5 QP, 3.04 AVG, 3rd place, National Conference)

The Daredevils scored a victory in their opening week contest, a 124-103 [5-2] home victory over the Utah Eagles. Ronald Ross led all Daredevils with 24 points; while veteran Nick VanderLaan yanked down 11 boards. Their second home game of the week found them at the short end of a Minot victory, 117-111 [5-2]. This time the Daredevils' top scorer was Odartey Blankson with 23 points; David Bell dished out nine assists in the Butte loss. Their final game, and their first with new head coach Patrick O'Herron, was a 109-106 [5-2] overtime loss at Yakama; Ronald Ross had a yeoman effort in the game, leading his team in points (35), rebounds (9) and assists (8).

Great Falls Explorers (12-5, 7.35 QP, 4.32 AVG, 2nd place, National Conference)

Two victories on the road; two victories at home - a nice week for the Explorers. The first two home games, an 88-82 [5-2] victory over Yakama, and a 113-80 [6-1] domination over Minot, helped push the Explorers closer to the top of the CBA's National Division. Javon Harris scored 18 points and yanked down 9 boards in Great Falls' victory over the Sun Kings; while Jamar Howard (22 pts) and Eric Strand (11 rebs) kept Great Falls in the win column. The Explorers then traveled to Pittsburgh for two games at the Petersen Events Center. The first game, a 111-106 [5-2] overtime victory for the Explorers, was again passed by Jamar Howard (20 pts, 16 rebs); while the second game, a 112-103 [5.5-1.5] win for Great Falls, was thanks to the efforts of Malik Moore (30 points) and Marc Mazur (10 rebs, 7 assists).

Indiana Alley Cats (9-8, 60.0 QP, 3.53 AVG, 2nd place, American Conference)

The Alley Cats garnered a 3-0 winning streak this week, with two road victories and a stunning win at home. The first game of the week was a 117-105 [7-0] victory in Minot over the Skyrockets, in which Shaun Fountain led all Cats with 34 points; J.J. Sullinger and Will Caudle notched 22 points apiece in the victory. Sullinger led the Cats with 12 rebounds; while Fountain and Erick Barkley had six assists apiece. The Alley Cats followed that win up with a 110-105 [5-2] victory over the Pittsburgh Xplosion; Fountain was high scorer (27 points) for the Cats, while Chris Garnett pulled down 10 boards. The final win of the week for Indiana came at their home arena, the Anderson Wigwam, against the Minot Skyrockets, 112-111 [5.5-1.5], in front of 1,246 supportive fans. For the third consecutive game, Shaun Fountain (34 points) paced the Cats, while J.J. Sullinger pulled down eight boards and Erick Barkley dished out five assists.

Minot Skyrockets (8-9, 57.5 QP, 3.38 AVG, 3rd place, American Conference)

Minot finished 1-3 on the week to the surging Indiana Alley Cats. On January 2, Indiana defeated the Skyrockets 117-105 [7-0], despite Ray Cunningham's 30 points on the night. Minot then undertook a three-game road trip, first visiting Montana for a 113-80 [6-1] loss at Great Falls, even though Willie Mitchell (24 points) and Jitim Young (6 rebs, 5 assists) paced the Rockets. Minot was able to notch a win against the Butte Daredevils with a 117-111 [5-2] victory in the Butte Civic Center; Willie Chandler was the top Skyrocket with 24 points, while Steve Castleberry yanked down 12 boards for Minot. In the final game of the week for the Skyrockets, the team fought tooth and nail with the Indiana Alley Cats, losing by a single point, 112-111 [5.5-1.5], with Willie Mitchell again leading the Skyrockets with 33 points. In the four games played this week, Jitim Young led the Skyrockets in each game in the assists column, distributing 30 assists in the four contests.

Pittsburgh Xplosion (1-15, 29.5 QP, 1.84 AVG, 4th place, American Conference)

Although the Xplosion had four home games this week, the contests were split between two separate Pittsburgh venues. On January 3, Pittsburgh lost to the Albany Patroons 136-129 [5-2], and then one day later was outscored by the Indiana Alley Cats 110-105 [5-2], with both games in Mellon Arena. Kevin Pittsnogle led all Xplosioners with 59 combined points in the two games; while Marvin Phillips yanked down 26 boards (13 per game) in the two losses. On January 6 and 8, the Xplosion played the first of several scheduled games at the University of Pittsburgh's Petersen Events Center. Both games were against the Great Falls Explorers; both games were extremely close contests; but unfortunately the Xplosion came up on the short end of each contest, losing 111-106 [5-2] in overtime on January 6, and then losing 112-103 [5.5-1.5] on January 8. Again, Kevin Pittsnogle was the top scorer for the Xplosion, averaging 25 points in the two games; while Andre Joseph was the top assist man for the Xplosion in three of the four contests.

Utah Eagles (5-10, 38.0 QP, 2.53 AVG, 4th place, National Conference)

Robert Griffin was the leading scorer in both of the Eagles' losses last week; a 101-83 [5.5-1.5] home defeat by the Yakama Sun Kings, in which Griffin scored 22 points; and a 124-103 [5-2] road loss to the Butte Daredevils, for which Griffin had 21 points. In those losses, however, Ali Berdiel continued his streak of leading the Eagles in assists, as the Butte game was his eleventh straight contest in which Berdiel either led or tied for the team dishout lead.

Yakama Sun Kings (12-6, 79.0 QP, 4.39 AVG, 1st place, National Conference)

The Sun Kings took two of three games from their opponents this week, holding on to their National Conference lead over the charging Great Falls Explorers. Although Yakama was able to pull victories away from Utah, with a 101-83 [5.5-1.5] win on January 2nd, and a 109-106 [5-2] overtime home win over Butte on January 8, the Sun Kings could not beat the Great Falls Explorers on January 3, losing 88-82 [5-2] in a tough road loss. The veteran Sun Kings still have their scoring touch intact; in the last five games, Ralph Holmes (19.8 ppg) and Galen Young (18.2 ppg) still top the Sun Kings' team lists; while Rocky Walls is the top rebounder for the Kings (9 rpg in the last 5 games).
