Cavemen Throttle Bombers 9-1

The Hannibal Cavemen dominated the Dubois County Bombers in a 9-1 win Saturday night at Clemens Field in Hannibal, Mo.

Kris Gardner (3-0) earned the win, throwing six scoreless innings and striking out 10 Bombers to offset six hits and a walk. Ryan Powers pitched the seventh, allowing one run, and Taylor Kaufman relieved him, working a scoreless eighth.

Zach Nichols closed out Dubois County with a scoreless ninth.

Taylor Luna took the loss for Dubois County, falling to 1-1 as he allowed four runs (two earned) in three innings. Control was a problem again for Luna; he walked six Cavemen while striking out one.

Nick Smart pitched the final five innings for the Bombers, keeping the game close until the seventh, when Hannibal scored five runs, all earned.

Cavemen second baseman Jonathan Golden struck the clinching blow, his seventh-inning grand slam pushing the Hannibal lead to 9-1. He had five RBI in all.

Right fielder Jake Wolf also drove in a pair for Hannibal while Bo Ausmus had the lone RBI for Dubois County, knocking in Landon Curry in the seventh.

This was the second straight loss for the Bombers, who fell to 17-6. Hannibal improved to 13-10 and moved into a tie with Quincy for second place in the Western Division, four games behind Dubois County.

The two teams play again Sunday evening.
