Smithfield, NC: The Cary Invasion arrived in Smithfield on Saturday night on the heels of a tough overtime win the night before. The game started out sloppy and looked to be mostly a defensive struggle throughout the first quarter, with neither team mounting much of a lead. Cary led 22-20 after the first 12 minutes.
The second quarter was much of the same, but the Invasion did manage to stretch the lead to 12 points by halftime. In the third quarter, Invasion guard Freddie Little came alive and nearly single-handedly pushed the lead out to as many as 22 points in the third quarter. The visitors became complacent however and saw that lead dwindle to only a couple of possessions with just 5 minutes left in the game. Cary was able to hold on to win 99-89.
The rosters for both teams were short of key players. Gladiator forward and the TRBL's leading scorer Kason Cheeks just left the team for an overseas basketball contract. Gladiator forward Travis Taylor, Invasion forward Jonathan Moore, and Invasion guard Brock Young did not suit up for the game. With the win, Cary moves back to the top of the TRBL point standings.
