Carolina Diamonds Back Home After Long Road Trip
SALISBURY - The Carolina Diamonds are back home after a two week road trip to Chicago and Ohio which boosted the team to third place in the National Pro Fastpitch softball league standings.
The Diamonds will now face a slew of former Olympians between the Chicago Bandits this week and Florida's USSSA Pride next weekend.
"Being involved, especially this time of the year with the Olympics, you are looking at the best of the best and this is the best we have at this point being able to compete and they are having a good time with it," head coach Lisa Navas said.
Chicago - featuring former USA Olympic pitcher and University of Tennesse standout Monica Abbott - is on a seven game losing streak but Navas knows you can not look at that statistic as an indication of what one game or the whole series will be like. The two teams square off Wednesday and Thursday in Kannapolis at CMC-NorthEast Stadium, Friday in Hickory at LP Frans Stadium and Saturday in Lexington at North Davidson High School. These games come after a demanding time on the road. However, the players have spent several days at home recuperating. "We should be back with it, we are in a good position and there is still a long season in front of us," Navas added. Many members of the team adjusted their play to help fill positions during the road trip, especially because some teammates have not been available due to other obligations across the country. One example of this is infielder Amanda Kamekona, who was moved to the outfield to preserve her bat in the lineup and in doing so hit three home runs in the four game series against Akron.
Having players in and out more frequently at the professional level rather than the collegiate level where Navas and her staff have extensive experience means managing the Diamonds sometimes is more about making adjustments.
"Everybody that has been given the opportunity to play in some different positions or because somebody that's been playing regularly are not there have stepped up and I really appreciate that," Navas said.
