Carolina Cobras News Release

RALEIGH, N.C. (July 30, 2002)- The Carolina Cobras of the Arena Football League announced today their intention of moving the team to Charlotte, NC, beginning in the 2003 season. Both the Charlotte Coliseum Authority, a political subdivision of the city of Charlotte, and the AFL's Board of Directors must still approve the impending move. If approved, the Cobras will play their home contests at the Charlotte Coliseum beginning in February 2003.

The deal, if approved by both the Coliseum Authority and the AFL Board of Directors, will run for three seasons, with an option for an additional three years. The Coliseum Authority will conduct their vote on August 14, while the League vote will commence on August 17, one day prior to the ArenaBowl XVI, the AFL's championship game.

The Arena Football League, typically played from April to August, will move their season to the beginning of February next year and will end with ArenaBowl XVII on June 22, 2003. The Cobras compete in the AFL's Southern Division, along with the Georgia Force (Atlanta), Orlando Predators, and Tampa Bay Storm.

Carolina began their inaugural season in April of 2000 at the Entertainment and Sports Arena in Raleigh, NC and has compiled an all-time record of 17-27 (.386), including post season. This past year, the Cobras finished 6-8 in the regular season and qualified for their second consecutive post season berth.

The Cobras (7-8), coming off a 72-64 First Round Playoff win over the defending AFL champion Grand Rapids Rampage, will take on the two-time AFL champion Arizona Rattlers (11-3) this Sunday, August 4, 3:00 p.m. (ET) in the Quarterfinals. The winner will advance to the Semifinals the weekend of August 10-11. This is the Cobras first-ever Quarterfinal Playoff contest in team history. The game can be seen live on The New TNN with Eli Gold (play-by-play), Charles Davis (color analyst) and Jill Arrington (sideline/halftime host) describing all the action.
