Sky Blue FC News Release
Houston, Texas - Sky Blue FC (4-11-4, 16 points) defeat the Houston Dash 2-1 at BBVA Stadium with both goals coming from the feet of Carli Lloyd. Lloyd opened the scoring in the 26th minute and scored the game winner in the 41st minute.
With a free kick earned in the 15th minute, Sky Blue FC attempted to open the match up after Imani Dorsey sent the ball into the box. Dorsey lofted the ball into open space and an unmarked Carli Lloyd went diving forward to get her head on the ball to send it on frame. Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell had quick hands and was able to deny Lloyd with a diving save.
Houston kept trying to pressure the Sky Blue backline by playing the ball into forward Rachel Daly but didn't have a clear opportunity until the 23rd minute of play. Dash midfielder Sofia Huerta passed Daly the ball in open space at the top of the 18-yard box, Daly turned right to cut towards goal and sent her shot right at Kailen Sheridan for an easy save.
Lloyd put Sky Blue up 1-0 in the 26th minute after making a run into the box unmarked. Buildup to the goal started with captain Sarah Killion passing the ball down the right side of the field to Jen Hoy. Hoy took one touch to blow by Dash defender Allysha Chapman and sent her low cross through the box to the feet of Lloyd, who one-timed the ball to the back of the net.
Lloyd came close to her second goal of the night in the 31st minute as the Dash defense gave her too much space to cut into the box from the left side and rip a shot. Dash defender Amber Brooks happened to be in the right place at the right time and Lloyd's shot deflected off her. In the 39th minute, Lloyd went at goal after beating midfielder Sophie Schmidt and ripped another shot that was deflected out of play by Dash defender Ally Prisock.
Persistence was key for Lloyd as she netted her second goal of the night in the 41st minute after receiving a well-timed pass by Raquel Rodriguez. The buildup began as Sheridan sent the ball up to Rodriguez in the midfield, who collected and got around Schmidt to send the pass to Lloyd on the left side of the field. Lloyd was unmarked and in space as she dribbled at the backline and as Priscok approached she sent her shot low into the goal.
Houston was close to gaining a goal back in the 43rd minute off a corner kick delivered by Dash midfielder Kristie Mewis. The corner kick was sent right into Daly waiting at the near post, who flicked a header in and was denied by the crossbar.
In the 47th minute, Daly had another opportunity to put the Dash on the scoreboard but sent her shot went just inches wide of the far-left post.
Lloyd still looking to add another came close in the 57th minute but just curled the ball wide of the right post.
Daly with another chance in the 64th minute sent her shot over the crossbar as she was just inches away from the goal.
The Dash notched their first goal of the game in the 94th minute to make the game 2-1. Brooks sent a long ball to the head of Ariana Calderon on the left side of the field, who flicked it to Kealia Ohai. With a few quick touches to get space, Ohai ripped her shot past the diving Sheridan. Houston's late effort wasn't enough to cancel out the brace by Lloyd.
