October 21, 2002 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2) News Release
Philadelphia defender Glenn Carbonara has long been considered one of indoor soccer's best defenders, but the two-time All-League selection has rarely been recognized for his offensive talents, scoring just 81 goals in 400 career games entering the 2002-03 season. The Vineland, NJ native, who had registered just one goal in Philadelphia's first three games of the campaign, made his second tally of the season a big one as he netted the game-winning 2-point goal at 4:01 of overtime to propel Philadelphia to a 10-8 victory over Dallas on Saturday, October 19. The win moved the Kixx to 3-1 on the season and into sole possession of first-place in the Eastern Conference. The loss dropped Dallas to 2-3 and into a second-place tie with San Diego in the Western Conference standings.
Philadelphia now holds a one-game lead on both the Baltimore Blast and Cleveland Force in the Eastern Conference standings. Baltimore (2-2) dropped a 12-10 (OT) home decision to the Milwaukee Wave on October 19 as Greg Howes scored the game-winning 2-point goal at 12:53 of the extra session. The win moved Milwaukee to a perfect 4-0 on the season and increased the club's hold on first-place in the Western Conference to two and-a-half games.
Cleveland (2-2) moved into a second-place tie with Baltimore in the Eastern Conference by way of a 10-8 win over San Diego on Friday, October 18. Hector Marinaro scored the game-winning goal and added three assists as interim head coach Andy Schmetzer won his first game behind the Force bench.
The Sockers (2-3) rebounded the next night with a 14-10 win at Kansas City on October 19 as Carlos "Chile" Farias bagged three goals, a pair of assists, and 10 points to lead San Diego to its first road win of the season. The loss was the Comets (0-3) third straight to open the season, despite a two-goal performance from Dino Delevski and a 20-save outing by Paolo Ceccarelli.
The Harrisburg Heat was idle last week and now trails Philadelphia by one and-a-half games in the Eastern Conference standings. Harrisburg (1-2) will travel to Baltimore to face the Blast on Saturday, October 26.
