Edmonton Capitals News Release

Edmonton, AB - Edmonton Capitals left fielder and 2010 co-MVP Larry Bigbie has been named to the 2010 All-Independent Leagues All-Star Team.

Baseball America announced the first and second All-Independent all-star teams earlier this week, and the Caps' slugger Bigbie was one of only three Golden Baseball League players - and the only non-pitcher - to be selected.

Bigbie, 32, played 69 games for the Caps this season and led the GBL with a .403 batting average, helping the team compile a 51-38 overall record. The former Major Leaguer had 93 hits this year, 16 of which were home runs, in addition to his 74 RBI, 54 runs scored and staggering .514 on-base percentage.

Bigbie was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the first round (21st overall) of the 1999 Major League Baseball amateur draft and played more than four years with the Orioles between 2001 and 2005 before being traded during the 2005 season to the Colorado Rockies. His other Major League experience after that came with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2006. Bigbie's best MLB season was 2004 when he played 139 games for the Orioles and batted .280 with 15 home runs and 68 RBI.

The only other two GBL players to be selected for the All-Independent teams were Maui pitchers Wes Ethridge and Donald Brandt. Ethridge was named to the first team alongside Bigbie, while Brandt was picked for the second team.

The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats for the 2011 campaign, presented by Canadian Tire, are now available. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
