Edmonton Capitals News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Capitals' pitching staff got a huge boost this week when the team purchased the contract of current Golden Baseball League wins leader Daryl Arreola from the Yuma Scorpions.
Arreola is a 27-year-old right-handed pitcher from Mesa, Arizona, who has dominated GBL batters so far this season. He leads the league with seven wins and just one loss, and he's also first in strikeouts with 49. Arreola brings a 2.59 ERA to the Caps, which puts him in third in the league.
The Caps (28-15) have won 12 straight games and are one win away from tying the league record for consecutive victories, so it's not like they were in dire need of improvement. But with the second half of the 2010 campaign about to start, they're gearing up for a push towards the post-season.
"The way our offence is rolling, and you throw another arm in our rotation as good as his, it's just going make our team that much harder to beat," Caps Field Manager Brent Bowers said of the key addition. "He got seven wins in the first half, and hopefully he can get seven or eight more for us in the second half."
Arreola was affiliated with the Arizona Diamondbacks during the 2006 season, playing as high as AAA before moving to the independent circuit. He got the start for Yuma against the Caps earlier this season on May 25 and gave up three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings while striking out four.
"I remember him throwing against us, and I really liked him," Bowers said. "So when I had a chance to get this guy, I was very happy. I grabbed him right away."
Not surprisingly, Arreola was named to the GBL all-star team and participated in the all-star festivities earlier this week in Tucson, Arizona, along with new Caps teammates Cliff Brumbaugh, Tom Collaro and Alex Francisco. The four are all scheduled to arrive back in Edmonton on Thursday, though Bowers said Arreola likely won't pitch until Monday against Tijuana.
In the meantime, the Caps host Arreola's former squad, the Scorpions, for a four-game series Thursday through Sunday at TELUS Field. All games begin at 7 p.m., except for Sunday's 2 p.m. afternoon start.
The Capitals are Edmonton's first choice for professional baseball and family entertainment. Season seats start at less than $9 per game and are available pro-rated for the balance of the season. Individual game tickets are available for just $10 every game. Tickets are available at all Ticketmaster locations, the TELUS Field Box Office during regular business hours, by calling (780) 414-GOAL (4625) or online at capsbaseball.ca.
