Capitanes Invade Barre Friday Night
February 18, 2010 - Premier Basketball League (PBL)
Vermont Frost Heaves News Release
The Vermont Frost Heaves (3-4) of the Premier Basketball League host the first-place Arecibo Capitanes (9-1) on Friday night, February 19th, at 7:05 pm at the Barre Auditorium. The event is sponsored by National Life Group, premier sponsor of beloved Heaves mascot Bump the Moose. Bump will be celebrating his birthday at the game, and will be joined all night by many of his favorite mascot pals from across Vermont. At halftime the Frost Heaves will honor several hundred Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts from the one dozen Vermont troops and packs that will be in attendance. Serving as the Northfield Savings Bank 110% Community All-Star will be Barre City Manager John Craig. His appearance will benefit the Greater Barre Community Justice Center, whose mission is to develop and facilitate restorative justice and conflict resolution in the greater Barre community.
Vermont is riding a three-game winning streak, having beaten historical rivals Rochester, Manchester, and Buffalo in the past two weeks. Troy Jackson, the Frost Heaves' leading scorer, was named PBL Player of the Week earlier this month for scoring outbursts against Manchester and Rochester of 25 and 34 points, respectively. The Heaves have also added lightning-quick guard Al Stewart to their roster today, who some will recognize from his productive seasons with Manchester.
The Capitanes, hailing from Arecibo, Puerto Rico, had won their first nine games before falling in Rochester to the defending champion Razorsharks, 113-101. They remain atop the PBL standings by one game over the 8-2 Halifax Rainmen, and by two games over Rochester.
These two teams have several players high on the list of league leaders in several statistical categories. Vermont's Jackson is the league's fourth highest scorer, averaging 21.3 points per game. Juwan Bailey is the Heaves' second leading scorer with 15.6 per contest. Ross Demasi is sixth in the PBL with 10.4 rebounds per game, and Dwuan Rice sits atop the league's assist leader board with his 6.2 helpers per game. Arecibo is led in scoring by Angelo Reyes with 20.6 points per game and Elias Ayuso with 20.0, who are fifth and eighth in the PBL, respectively.
Tickets are still available, and it should be an energetic house at the Aud. Tickets are currently on sale at Allen Lumber in Barre, First in Fitness in Montpelier, at flynntix.org, and starting an hour before tip-off Friday, at the Auditorium box office.
The game will also be broadcast live over the Internet through Central Sports Net, which can be found at cvtsport.net.
