Portland Pirates News Release
PORTLAND, ME - The Portland Pirates announced today that the Washington Capitals, their National Hockey League affiliate, have signed left wing Mel Angelstad to a new one-year contract. Angelstad is expected to return for his second season in Portland this fall.
"Mel is a veteran who brings great leadership to our locker room. With so many young players on our roster, it was important to us to have someone like him on our team," said Shawn Simpson, Pirates' general manager. "Mel also has proven himself to be very active in the Greater Portland community and that too was an important factor in bringing him back."
Angelstad played in 53 games for the Pirates last season, scoring a goal and adding seven assists for eight points. He led the team with 212 penalty minutes. His best offensive showing came on March 16, 2002 when he had three assists in an 11-4 win over the Quebec Citadelles.
"Last year, I was really excited to go to Portland, to see a new city and be a part of the Washington Capitals' organization," said Angelstad. "Now that I know the city and the organization, I can't wait to get back there and get back on the ice with the Pirates."
Angelstad took home several pieces of hardware following his first season in Portland. He was voted most popular player by the fans. He was also very popular with his teammates, earning the Player's Player Award. Angelstad was also presented with the HG Insurance/K&K Insurance/AHL Man of the Year trophy. The award recognizes Angelstad's considerable commitment to community events during the course of the season.
This will be Angelstad's eleventh professional season. The native of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan turned pro with Thunder Bay of the then-named Colonial Hockey League. He won back-to-back Colonial Cups with Thunder Bay in 1994 and 1995. Last season was his first full season of play in the American Hockey League.
