In their home finale, the Boston Cannons defeated the Baltimore Bayhawks 23-16 at Nickerson Field in Boston, Mass in front of 6,748 fans. The Cannons were led by goalie Chris Garrity who notched 25 saves and was named Bud Game MVP.
Boston outscored the Baltimore 9-3 in the fourth quarter after only being up 14-13 after three quarters. Midfielder Chris Fiore started things off with a bang in the fourth, scoring a two-pointer four minutes into the quarter. Fiore finished the game with three goals, including one two-pointer and an assist for five points.
Also chipping in for the Cannons in the fourth were rookie midfielder D. J. Andrzejewski, who scored his second goal of the game, attackman Conor Gill, midfielder David Jenkins, attackman John Christmas, and attackman Chazz Woodson, who notched the last two goals of the game.
Gill led all scorers with seven points, as he scored three goals, including one two-pointer and adding three assists. Rookie midfielder Matt Poskay scored four goals and notched his first career assist, on a nifty pass to fellow rookie Brett Bucktooth in the first quarter. Woodson notched two additional goals and an assist to give him four goals and one assist for the game.
Garrity was spectacular in net, stopping seven shots in both the first and fourth quarters. He added six saves in the second and five saves in third to give him 25 for the game. At the face-off X, Jenkins won 16-37 attempts and picked up seven groundballs. The game was certainly lacking penalties as the two teams set a record for longest time passed till the first penalty called. The first was after 4:39 had passed in the fourth quarter.
Baltimore was led by former Boston attackman Mark Millon, who scored five goals, and fellow attackman Tom Marechek who scored three goals, including one two-pointer. Former Boston midfielder Kevin Frew was effective at the face-off X for the Bayhawks, winning 21-37 attempts.
The Bayhawks played the Cannons tough throughout the first three quarters. Boston found itself up only one after the first quarter, 5-4, and the margin remained the same at half-time with the score 10-9 in favor of the Cannons. In the third quarter, both teams played even, as they each notched four points to make the score 14-13 in favor of the Cannons, before the Cannons' run.
At half-time the Cannons gave out their annual team awards. The Cannons' Rookie of the Year was Poskay, the 11th man Award went to Jenkins, and captain Ryan Curtis was named Cannon's Defensive Player of the Year. Conor Gill walked away with two awards, claiming both the Offensive Player of the Year Award and the Most Valuable Player Award. Midfielder Mike Battista, who recently announced his retirement because of post-concussion syndrome, was honored at half-time.
Attackman David Evans, who was scheduled to start the game, was pulled away because his wife Alison went in to labor. She gave birth to the couple's first son, Preston Lewis Evans sometime during halftime.
The Cannons wrapped up their home schedule and will travel to Rochester to play the Rattlers in their season finale, on August 12th at 7:30 p.m. They still have a chance to win the Eastern Conference crown, if they defeat Rochester and Philadelphia loses their finale to Baltimore.
