Boston Cannons News Release
BOSTON, MA - Friday, May 29, 2009 - The Boston Cannons (0-2) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) struck a deal at the 2009 MLL Collegiate Draft on Wednesday evening to acquire midfielder Greg Downing from the Denver Outlaws, in exchange for the seventh-overall selection in the first-round of the draft (Shane Walterhoefer), Cannons Vice President and General Manager Mark Kastrud announced today.
"Downing is an accomplished two-way midfielder in this league that can put the ball in the back of the net when given his opportunities," said Cannons Head Coach Bill Daye. "We're excited to welcome him on board and look forward to his immediate contributions."
Downing, 24, appeared in the first two games for the Outlaws this season and turned in a career-best four-goal performance, including one game-winning goal, on May 22 against the Cannons at Harvard Stadium. In addition, Downing collected one groundball in his first game with Denver, against Chicago on May 16. The 6-1, 195-pound native of Auburn, New York, played in all 12 games for the Los Angeles Riptide in 2008, where he collected 19 goals, including two power play goals and one game-winning goal, four assists and 21 groundballs. He also picked up one goal in the Riptide's 2008 semifinals game against Denver.
Originally selected by the Riptide in the first-round (6th overall) of the 2007 MLL Collegiate Draft, Downing played in the remaining nine games after the draft in 2007 for the Riptide, and notched seven goals, including a game-winner, seven assists and 16 groundballs. In the post-season, Downing appeared in both the semifinals and the championship game for the Western Conference Champion Riptide that season, where he put together a then career-best breakthrough performance of three goals.
A 2007 graduate of Fairfield University, Downing was the program's only multi-time All-America selection, earning Honorable Mention accolades each of his four years. Having scored 20 or more goals in each of his four seasons, the NEILA First Team All-New England and First Team All-ECAC (2007 and 2006) midfielder finished his career with 101 goals, good for fourth all-time in Fairfield history. He also ranks among the top-10 in the program's history with 141 career points and 40 career assists.
The Cannons will return to action this weekend when they travel to Illinois to take on the Chicago Machine at Soldier Field on Saturday, May 30 at 4:00 PM (ET).
