October 7, 2007 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
West Oahu CaneFires News Release

The West Oahu CaneFires racked up 15 hits and put an end to a three-game losing streak, outpacing the Waikiki BeachBoys 6-3 in a Hawaii Winter Baseball game at Maui's Iron Maehara Stadium this afternoon.

The CaneFires (2-5) scored a run in both the first and fourth innings, and added two insurance runs in the seventh frame as the first four batters reached on base hits. After a Ryan Rogowski RBI single coupled with an Anthony Hatch sacrifice fly, West Oahu took a 4-1 lead.

Josh Bell smacked a two-run homer over the left-center field fence in the ninth inning to give the CaneFires a 6-1 advantage. The Los Angeles Dodgers prospect was all over the 93 miles-per-hour fastball from Waikiki reliever David Newton.

The BeachBoys (4-3) rallied in the bottom of the ninth with two runs coming on a Michael McKenry home run that plated Jeff Kindel. Waikiki got the tying run to the plate as Michael Wilson came in to pinch hits after the two previous batters walked, but the powerful outfielder popped out to end the game.

Steve Johnson (1-0) earned the victory after allowing a lone run on two hits in five strong innings for West Oahu. Benjamin Snyder was saddled with his second loss despite giving up just a run in three innings on the bump.

The game marked the HWB debut for Matt Inouye, a recent addition to the BeachBoys roster and former University of Hawaii standout. The designated hitter went 2-3 with two singles-one third of Waikiki's hit total on the game.

Both squads will meet again tomorrow night in the rubber game of the three-game Maui series. First pitch is slated for 6:30 p.m.
