October 8, 2008 - Hawaii Winter Baseball 2 (HWB 2)
West Oahu CaneFires News Release

West Oahu scored two runs in the ninth inning and held on for the 7-6 victory over North Shore tonight at Waipahu's Hans L'Orange Park.

Honu first baseman Chris Carter hit his second home run of the season to put the Honu up 6-5 in the home half of the seventh inning. The Oakland Athletics prospect raised his batting average to .269 with the effort, and came across to score a game-high four times.

However, with North Shore still up by one run in the ninth inning, reliever Sam Demel (0-1) allowed two runs, including the go-ahead score on a passed ball by Honu catcher Adam Davis that allowed Tyler Henson to come home.

West Oahu (6-3) catcher James Skelton collected three hits, and boosted his batting average to .400. Teammates Cyle Hankerd and Miles Durham chipped in two RBIs and a double apiece.

Ryunosuke Yokoyama (1-0) earned the victory after tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief. Cliff Flagello closed out the ninth inning and earned his first save in the process. On the evening, five CaneFires pitchers combined to rack up 11 strikeouts, and stranded eight Honu runners on base.

The two squads return to Hans L'Orange Park tomorrow at 7 p.m. for the second of a three-game series.
