Cane Cutters Sweep Marshals on Doubleheader Wednesday

The Acadiana Cane Cutters swept a doubleheader in Dallas on Wednesday night from the Texas Marshals, winning game one 7-6 in extra innings and game two 7-2.

In game one, the Cane Cutters jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a two-run home run by Taylor Walker down the left field line off of Marshals starting pitcher Austin Brooks.

The Marshals responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Jace Reese and Chase Daughdrill made the score 2-2 before Daughdrill came into score on an error to give the Marshals a 3-2 advantage.

The Cane Cutters tied it up at 3-3 on an RBI fielder's choice by Jalen Haskin in the top of the second inning and went ahead 4-3 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Hunter Wood.

Oliver Christensen tied the game back up at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout. Carlos Contreras then delivered and RBI double into the right-centerfield gap to score Carson Shaddy all the way from first base to push the Marshals ahead 5-4. Reese then drilled his second RBI double of the game down the right field line to score pinch runner James Stroud which gave the Marshals a 6-4 lead.

Trent Giambrone lifted a two-out, two-run home run to left field in the top of the sixth inning to tie things back up at 6-6.

As the game went into extra innings, the game was delayed in the top of the 8th inning for about 30 minutes do to lightening in the area. After play resumed, the Cane Cutters pushed a run across in the top of the ninth inning on an RBI ground out by Chance Vincent to take a 7-6 lead. Scott Ashford picked up the save for the Cane Cutters by closing out the Marshals in the bottom of the ninth inning. Jacob Hubbard was credited with the win for the Cane Cutters and Nick Palacios took the loss for the Marshals.

Shaddy led the Marshals offensively in game one, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a walk.

Joe Powell got the start on the mound for the Marshals in game two of the doubleheader. Powell surrendered a run in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Chance Vincent.

Trent Giambrone hit a solo home run to left field to give the Cane Cutters a 2-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.

The Cane Cutters added three runs in the top of the fifth inning off of relief pitcher Ryan Hill to go up 5-0.

Jace Reese put the Marshals on the board in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double. Chase Daughdrill followed with an RBI groundout to make it a 5-2 ballgame. But the Cane Cutters got out of a bases loaded, one-out jam with a double play ball to end the inning.

The Cane Cutters added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single by Trey Hicks off of Jake Smith to push their lead to 7-2.

Nick Johnson picked up the win for the Cane Cutters as he tossed 5.1 innings, allowing just two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.

With the wins, the Cane Cutters improve to 12-5 on the season and are a half-game out of first place in the TCL standings. The Marshals fell to 3-14. The Marshals will start a four-game road trip on Thursday night in Victoria against the Generals at 7:35pm.
