Acadiana Cane Cutters News Release
The Cane Cutters came away with their third straight victory Sunday night, a 5-0 win over the Texas Marshals in their home stadium. The victory is the Acadiana's 21st on the season, one night after they became the second team to reach the 20-win mark on the season. The win was also the Cane Cutters' 7 th since the start of the second half of the season, which leads the league in that stretch. The Cane Cutters are currently tied with Victoria for second place in the Texas Collegiate League with 22 games remaining before the playoffs begin in August.
The Cane Cutters got a boost on the mound for Victor Sanchez tonight, as the New Mexico sophomore-to-be pitched 7 innings of shutout ball, giving up 5 hits and striking out 5 on his way to win, his second in as many starts. This 7 inning performance followed Sanchez's complete game win during his last outing, an 11-1 victory over the Victoria Generals. Tonight's win improved Sanchez's record to 3-1 on the season. The bats came out hot tonight as well, as Acadiana was able to connect on 13 hits for the game while scoring 5 runs. Brett Thornell, a third baseman from Stephen F Austin, went 3 for 3 tonight with a double, a stolen bag, one run scored, and two free passes. Second baseman Nick Dawson upped his hit streak to 9 games, going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs, scoring a run and walking once. Nathan Pugh and Jordie Hein also added 2 hits, one a double from Pugh. Logan Taylor also added his 4th double on the year. Pitchers Colton Freeman and Ryan Deemes each pitched a clean inning after Sanchez's appearance to close the game out for the Cane Cutters.
The Cane Cutters will return home on Tuesday for a two-game series against the Brazos Valley Bombers, the top team in the Texas Collegiate League. The Bombers are coming off a 1-1 series split with the third place East Texas Pump Jacks. The Cane Cutters have played the Bombers close in each of their matchups this season, and both teams will look to make this upcoming series another interesting one. Following the series against the Bombers, Acadiana will travel to Kilgore, TX to face the East Texas Pump Jacks on Thursday and Friday. The East Texas series is sure to be a great one as well.
