Ottawa Fury FC News Release
OTTAWA, ON - Ottawa Fury FC today announced that Canadian midfielders Julian de Guzman and Mauro Eustaquio have both re-signed with the club. The pair played a vital role in Ottawa's midfield success helping the club claim their first-ever postseason berth and capture the NASL Fall Season Championship. As per club policy terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
"We're thrilled to have both these players re-sign with the club," said head coach Paul Dalglish. "The experience and leadership that Julian de Guzman brings to this club is extremely valuable. He offers us as much on the field as he does off it."
"Mauro made the most of every opportunity that he was given this past season," added Dalglish. "We look forward to the continued progress of this young Canadian talent."
De Guzman, 34, became one of the most notable signings in club history last March. The Canadian Men's National Team captain returns to Ottawa Fury FC following a season where he featured in 16 matches playing a vital role in the success of Ottawa's midfield while also serving as a valuable veteran for his teammates including Canadian U23 international Mauro Eustaquio.
Last month, de Guzman became the most capped player in Canadian Men's National Team history when he made his 85th appearance for his country in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifier against Honduras.
The Toronto, ON native boasts over 360 professional games that includes matches in the Bundesliga (Hannover 96), La Liga (Deportivo La Coruna) and Major League Soccer (Toronto FC and FC Dallas).
"I thoroughly enjoyed my return to playing in Canada this past season with Ottawa Fury FC," said de Guzman. "I'm excited for the 2016 season and look forward to working with Paul to continue building Fury FC."
Eustaquio, 22, had a break-out year in his second professional season. The rising Canadian talent featured in 22 matches scoring twice highlighted by his first-ever professional goal in a tone-setting road win in Indianapolis. The Portuguese-born midfielder returns to the club for a third straight season. Eustaquio has also represented Canada at the U20 and U23 levels and was most recently part of Canada's Men's Olympic Qualifying team.
"2015 was a very special season for me," said Eustaquio. "I felt that I progressed a lot and I look forward to taking my game to another level with Fury FC in 2016."
