August 16, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

BROCKTON 4, QUEBEC 3 @ Brockton, Mass. Time: 2:36 ATT: 3,017 W: Eddie Aucoin (4-0) L: Danny Prata (4-1) S: Joey Cole (13) HR: BRK - Kris Zacuto (9) A leadoff home run by LF Kris Zacuto in the bottom of the sixth inning gave Brockton a 4-3 lead that Eddie Aucoin, in relief of starter Kevin Beavers, and closer Joey Cole would hold by allowing just one hit in the final three innings. Zacuto and SS/LF Eugene Julien had two hits apiece for the Rox, while RF Simon Legare was a perfect 4-for-4 with one run scored and one driven in for Quebec. Danny Prata took his first loss of the season, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits in six innings of work. Cole collected his 13th save of the year by striking out the league's home run leader, 3B Eddie Lantigua, looking on three pitches. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW JERSEY 8, ELMIRA 7 @ Little Falls, N.J. Time: 2:53 ATT: 2,233 W: Joel Bennett (10-1) L: Mike Howell (5-8) S: Fabricio Benitez (5) HR: ELM - Samone Peters (2), Ryan Dorsey (2) Jackals starter Joel Bennett allowed six hits and four runs, three earned, in six and one-third innings of work but struck out nine to reach double-digits in wins with his tenth of the year. 1B Francisco Lebron helped Bennett's cause by going 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs. 2B Ricardo Cordova also drove in two for New Jersey while DH Jose Salas had one RBI and a pair of hits. Closer Fabricio Benitez gave up three hits and two runs to a resilient Elmira team in the ninth, but managed to quell the rally and lock down his fifth save of the season. LF Trey Beamon was 4-for-5 with two runs driven in and both RF Samone Peters and SS Ryan Dorsey homered for the Pioneers. Mike Howell took the loss, his eighth, giving up six runs on five hits in five innings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- WORCESTER 5, GRAYS 4 @ Worcester, Mass. Time: 2:52 ATT: 3,355 W: Chris Shank (2-3) L: Evan Neiser (1-2) S: Dave Byard (12) HR: GRAYS - Darren Ciraco 2 (9), Scott Grimes (3) WOR - Yohanny Valera (13) Most of the fireworks came early between the Tornadoes and Grays, as RF Darren Ciraco hit his first homer of the game with two outs in the first innings to give the Grays a quick 2-0 lead. The Tornadoes rapidly answered when C Yohanny Valera followed up RF Andy Brown's RBI single with a two-run shot of his own. The Grays tied the game in the second on 3B Scott Grimes' solo home run and took the lead when Ciraco knocked out his second in the top of the third inning. There the scoring would remain until the seventh. Grays starter Lincoln Mincks was replaced when he began the inning by hitting CF Lucas Taylor with a pitch, and reliever Evan Neiser walked LF Josh Beauregard to set up a sacrifice bunt by SS Omar Pena. The move worked as Brown picked up his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly and Valera put Worcester ahead for good with a two-out single that scored Beauregard. Tornadoes closer Dave Byard picked up his twelfth save with a perfect ninth inning. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- NEW HAVEN 4, NORTH SHORE 0 @ West Haven, Conn. Time: 2:39 ATT: 908 W: Rolando Valles (7-5) L: Ryan Bicondoa (6-5) S: None HR: NHC - Jeff Brooks (9) For eight and one-half innings, the game between the Cutters and the Spirit was a classic pitchers' duel. New Haven's Rolando Valles scattered ten hits in nine full innings, but struck out 13 Spirit hitters and walked no one. North Shore's Ryan Bicondoa allowed just two hits in the first eight innings and sat down five on strikeouts. But in the bottom of the ninth New Haven found some offense, and CF Keto Anderson and SS Chas Terni started things off with back-to-back singles. Doubling Bicondoa's hit totals for the night was a catalyst for change, and Jarret Sues came on in relief to face dangerous the heart of the Cutter lineup. He sat down LF Derrick Gibson swinging and opted to intentionally walk 1B Bill Peavey - thus continuing his on-base streak to 43 games - and face DH Jeff Brooks, Batter of the Week in the Can-Am. Brooks showed North Shore exactly why he received the honor by drilling the one-out pitch from Sues deep for a grand slam to give Valles and the Cutters the thrilling victory.
