Camden Riversharks Sign Former Major Leaguer Delwyn Young

CAMDEN, N.J. - The Camden Riversharks have announced the signing of former Major League utility player Delwyn Young. Young played in parts of five MLB seasons for the Los Angeles Dodgers and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Young, 30, was last in the MLB in 2010 when he appeared in 110 games for the Pirates. He has 344 games in the big leagues, spanning 2006-2010, with a career .258 average along with 17 home runs and 81 runs batted in.

"We're excited to add Delwyn," said Riversharks Manager Jeff Scott. "He'll give us another solid bat to our lineup and we can do a few different things with him defensively."

Young, who has played both in the outfield and at second base, also has six years of AAA experience. He spent 2011 with the Phillies AAA Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, where he saw action in 126 games and hit .244 with 11 home runs and drove in 51. He also scored 51 times.

Young had a career year in 2007, where he hit .337 in 121 games for AAA Las Vegas. He was briefly called up to the majors when the Dodgers traded Wilson Betemit to the Yankees for reliever Scott Proctor.

Young becomes the ninth former Major Leaguer to take the field for the Riversharks in 2012. The Los Angeles native was drafted by his home town Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2002 draft.

In a corresponding move, Camden released catcher Scott Knazek.
