July 2, 2002 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Houston Aeros News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - Minnesota Wild General Manager Doug Risebrough announced today that Cam Stewart has been hired as a Houston Aeros' assistant coach for the 2002-03 season. This will be Stewart's first year as a coach, after playing professional hockey for nine seasons.
"I am looking forward to my new career in hockey as a coach behind the bench for the Houston Aeros," said Stewart. "The Wild have provided a great opportunity for me to help develop their younger players."
"We are looking very forward to having Cam back in Houston. He was a character player and will provide leadership to our team," said Dave Barr, Houston Aeros Vice President and General Manager.
Stewart will be working with Todd McLellan, who is returning for his second season as Aeros' head coach. Last season, the Aeros finished with a record of 39 wins, 31 losses and 10 ties, good for second in the Western Division and fourth in the Western Conference. The team advanced to the Western Conference Finals, before falling to the eventual Calder Cup Champions Chicago Wolves.
Stewart, 30 (9/18/71), missed the entire 2001-02 campaign after suffering a concussion in a preseason game against the Edmonton Oilers on September 25, 2001. The Kitchener, Ontario-native tallied 13 points (4-9-13) in 54 games for Minnesota during the 2000-01 season. Stewart played two seasons in Houston (1997-99) and was a member of the Aeros 1998-99 Turner Cup Championship team (IHL). He tallied 16 goals, 23 assists and 120 penalty minutes in 202 career NHL games with the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers and the Wild. He was selected by Minnesota from Florida in the 2000 NHL Expansion Draft.
