
Calvillo earns top honour as CFL's Most Outstanding Player

Calgary,AB (November 26, 2009) -The Canadian Football League (CFL) announced today the winners of the 2009 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards. This year's award winners were selected by 55 voting members, including representation from the Football Reporters of Canada (FRC) from the eight CFL markets, a national chapter and CFL head coaches.
Voters were asked to select players from the League who through on-field performance excellence, best represent the awards' title: Most Outstanding Player, Most Outstanding Canadian, Most Outstanding Defensive Player, Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman, Most Outstanding Rookie, and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player.
Also announced at the 2009 Gibson's Finest CFL Player Awards show were the Commissioner's Award and the Tom Pate Memorial Award.
Gibson's Finest CFL Most Outstanding Player - Anthony Calvillo - QB -Montreal Alouettes
For the second consecutive year, Anthony Calvillo has been named the league's top player. Calvillo led the Montreal Alouettes to a franchise-best 15-3 record. He passed for 4,639 yards, 26 touchdowns and only six interceptions while completing 72% of his passes, the second highest single-season completion percentage in CFL history. Calvillo was also named a CFL All-Star for the 4th time in his career. This is his third Most Outstanding Player award (2003, 2008).
Calvillo received 44 first place votes.
CFL Most Outstanding Canadian - Ricky Foley - DE - B.C. Lions
B.C. Lions defensive end Ricky Foley had a breakout year in 2009, finishing the season with 12 quarterback sacks, tied for the most in the CFL. The third year player registered 51 tackles, two special teams tackles and two pass knockdowns. The native ofCourtice,Ontario was drafted fourth overall by the Lions in the 2006 CFL Canadian Draft. This is Foley's first Most Outstanding Canadian award.
Foley received 31 first place votes.
CFL Most Outstanding Defensive Player - John Chick - DE -Saskatchewan Roughriders
In just his third year in the CFL,Saskatchewan defensive end John Chick has been named the league's top defensive player. Chick finished the season with the second highest total in sacks (11) and forced fumbles (4). He also registered 32 tackles, including four tackles for a loss, five pass knockdowns and two special teams' tackles. The product ofUtahState was also named a CFL All-Star in 2009. Both honours are the first of his career.
Chick received 34 first place votes.
CFL Most Outstanding Lineman - Scott Flory - OG -Montreal Alouettes
For the second-straight season Montreal Alouettes Scott Flory has been named the CFL's top offensive lineman. Flory anchored an offensive line that allowed the third fewest quarterback sacks (35) in the CFL.Montreal's offence finished first in total yards per game (390.3), first in passing yards per game (288.4) and second in rushing yards per game (119.9). Flory was named a CFL All-Star for the 7th time in his career. This is his second Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman award (2008).

CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player - Larry Taylor - KR -Montreal Alouettes
Kick return specialist Larry Taylor is the third Alouettes player to be honoured in 2009. Taylor finished the season third in combined years with 2,040, including 788 punt returns yards (first), 1,059 kickoff return yards (fifth) and 124 missed field goal return yards (second). He had three kick return touchdowns (two punt, 1 missed field goal), which was the most by any player in 2009.The product of theUniversity ofConnecticut was also named a CFL All-Star in 2009. Both honours are the first of his career.
Taylor received 36 first place votes.
CFL Most Outstanding Rookie - Martell Mallett - RB - B.C. Lions
In a season dubbed by many as 'the year of the running back' it's only fitting that a running back was named the league's top rookie. Martell Mallett finished the season with 1,240 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 214 carries. He also added 43 receptions for 432 yards and two touchdowns. Mallett was also named a 2009 West Division All-Star.
Mallett received 35 first place votes.
Tom Pate Memorial Award - Marwan Hage - C -Hamilton Tiger-Cats
Hamilton Tiger-Cats centre Marwan Hage is the 2009 recipient of the Tom Pate Memorial Award.The Tom Pate Award is handed out each year to a CFL player who displays qualities that distinguish them from their peers.
Every year the CFLPA invites each CFL Club to nominate a team member for this award. The recipient must be a player with outstanding sportsmanship and someone who has made a significant contribution to his team and to his community and Association.
Commissioner's Award - Wally Buono
This award is presented annually to someone who has made a tremendous contribution to the Canadian Football League. This year's recipient of the Commissioner's Award is B.C. Lions General Manager and Head Coach Wally Buono. As a player, coach and general manager, Buono has been involved with the CFL for nearly four decades. This season, Buono set a new record for the most wins by a head coach in the long history of the CFL.
