July 12, 2008 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF)
Rockford Thunder News Release
Thunder first baseman Tonya Callahan had two hits and three runs batted in on Saturday night, helping Rockford (11-13) avoid a sweep at the hands of the league-leading Philadelphia Force (17-7), as they won 5-3. Serena Settlemier (1-4) gave up just one earned run for her second straight game, and earned the win for Rockford.
Among Rockford's other hitters with good nights were Beth Boden (1-for-2, RBI), Amanda Williams (1-for-3, run), and Stephanie Fischer (1-for-3, run).
Rockford came out of the gate strong, as Kristen Zaleski and Audrey Rendon each reached base with no outs in the first inning. After a Lindsay Gardner sacrifice, Tonya Callahan got her first two RBIs of the night on a single to left field.
Philadelphia hit right back in the bottom of the inning, scoring three off of a homer by league batting average leader Kellie Wilkerson, and two-out runs by Chelsea Spencer and Savannah Long.
Rockford came around to tie the game in the second inning when Boden drove in Williams from second base with one out. Stephanie Fischer scored off of a Philadelphia error in the top of the fourth to take the lead, which they would hold for the rest of the game. Callahan added an insurance run in the top of the fifth to cap the game's scoring.
Margo Pruis (3-2) took the loss for Philly, allowing three earned runs over three and two thirds innings. Settlemier earned her first win of 2008 while striking out five Force hitters. She threw her second complete game of the series, after taking the loss in Rockford's game one 1-0 defeat.
Rockford will next take the field Thursday at the Washington Glory. In the teams' first series of the year, the Glory and Thunder tied 2-2 at Sportscore One. More information on that series will be posted on the Thunder website early in the week.
