California posts highest scoring game on season

(STOCKTON, CA) - The California Cougars returned to action on Saturday night hosting the Detroit Ignition. Before the game, the Cougars honored midfielder Brian Farber as the MISL's Offensive Player of the Week. Coming into the game, Detroit head the second position in the MISL standing and was a half game behind league leading Philadelphia KiXX.

The Cougars got the game off to a quick start just a minute into the contest, forward Vicente Figueroa slipped a free kick past Detroit's defense to put California up 2-0.

The MISL's Puma points leader Jamar Beasley tied up the Cougars with a shot past Cougars 'keeper Dominik Jakubek with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter.

Former Cougar midfielder Richardinho used a Beasley assist to put the Ignition up 4-0 with 1:27 to go in the first quarter.

Beasley posted his second unassisted goal of the night 2:27 into the second quarter to make it a 6-2 contest.

Cougars midfielder Jorge Martinez cut Detroit's led to two on a goal past Detroit goalkeeper Sanaldo on an assist from forward Bernie Lilavois.

Cougars veteran forward and co-captain Aaron Susi tied up the game at six aside on an assist from Figueroa.

The third quarter started off as a defensive back and forth with neither club giving up much. Susi cracked the scoring drought with a shot past Sanaldo to put California up 8-6 with 4:22 left in the third quarter.

Detroit's forward Worteh Sampson tied the match :14 seconds later to make it an 8-8 game.

Susi's hat trick just :33 seconds into the fourth quarter gave California the lead and forward Enrique Tovar's 3-point goal from 125 feet helped the Cougars create a five point gap over Detroit.

Detroit forward Mauricio Salles' goal with 9:26 left in the game cut the California lead 13-10.

The Ignition cut the lead to one on midfielder Miodrag Djerisilo's first goal of the game. Beasley was credited with the goal for his fifth point of the night.

With the hat trick already in the bag Susi put his eight point of the night past the Ignition defense to give the Cougars a 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter.

Cougars midfielder Eduardo Velez posted his first points of the night to extend California's lead 17-12.

Richardinho and Beasly connected for the second time in the game to cut the lead 17-14 before Detroit pulled Sanaldo in favor of a sixth attacker. The strategic tactic did not help as Tovar posted his second goal of the night and midfielder Brian Farber put in the final goal on a Nelson Santana assist to make it a 21-14 final.

The game marked the highest scoring output for the Cougars and the first time the club cracked the 20-point mark this season.

California next heads east to take on the top club in the league in Philadelphia in an early morning match up on Wednesday at 7:35 a.m. PST.
