Baltimore, MD - The Major Indoor Soccer League's (MISL) California Cougars put together a strong performance tonight but ultimately could not push past the fourth quarter assault by the Baltimore Blast, losing by a score of 6-5 at 1st Mariner Arena (SEE ATTACHED BOX SCORES).
The Blast's Giuliano Celenza put his team on the scoreboard with the first goal of the night early in the first quarter, followed again by teammate David Bascome. The Cougars fired a return with Enrique Tovar's score off of an assist by John Ball, closing out the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Blast's Aduato Neto score midway through the second quarter. It touched off a quick response by the Cougars' Aaron Susi who scored off of an assist by John Ball to end the half at 3-2.
Both teams returned to the field on a mission in the second half. The Blast were able to get past the Cougars with a score by Joel Bailey mid-way in the third quarter. The Cougars responded with two goals in the third with the first by Vicente Figueroa off of an assist by Antonio Sutton, followed by Richardinho's score to end the quarter.
Vicente Figueroa put up a score for the Cougars again at 6:48 in the fourth quarter to put them in the lead 5-4. However, the lead was short lived as the Blast's Aduato Neto and Giuliano Celenza each scored in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter to pull ahead of the Cougars for a final game score of 6-5.
"I was proud of our guys tonight," said California Cougars Head Coach Troy Dayak following the game. "We were strong but were ultimately beat by the better team. We cut our teeth on the road this season and we're learned a lot. We'll see if we can turn it into a win tomorrow night."
The California Cougars hit the road again on Saturday, February 4, in Philadelphia against the Philadelphia KIXX, 4:05 p.m. PST. The Cougars return home next week to the Stockton Arena, 248 W. Fremont Street, to take on the Chicago Storm, Thursday, February 9, 7:30 p.m. PST (NOTE NEW GAME TIME).
